Setting up a TV outdoors is often a crowd-pleasing strategy used by businesses, stadiums, restaurants, theme parks, and similar other locations. Thus, irrespective of whether you are a do-it-yourself homeowner or a commercial A/V professional, having knowledge of how to do proper installation is a must. Moreover, there are certain rules that you need to follow while installing an outdoor TV, whether it is a 4K or HD television.

We consulted several A/V professionals for tips and pointers regarding what should be done and points that are to be avoided when installing a TV outdoors. Let us go through the details in the following sections.

Tip #1: Outdoor and Indoor TVs are Different

The most important thing to keep in mind is that indoor TV is not suitable for use in outdoor environment. If the TV should become a permanent fixture in outdoor environment, then you need to select one that is rated for such use. Such TVs come equipped with extra bright panels and are capable of fighting off glare. This results in much better picture quality in outside lighting conditions.

Outdoor TVs catering to commercial applications are capable of continuous operations and extended duty cycles. These TVs are also capable of dissipating heat and fighting off bugs, water, wind, winter cold, and summer humidity.

Tip #2: TV Warranty

TV manufacturers suggest that an indoor TV should not be used outside. Moreover, in the manual you will find that the fine print advises against such outside use, which can void the warranty.

Tip #3: All Weather Mounts

Similar to the TV, the mounts should be for outside use. If an inside use mount is used for outdoor TV, then it will quickly deteriorate due to extreme weather conditions, rust, and may well fall apart.

On the other hand, outdoor mounts are sturdier and are capable of withstanding outdoor TVs weight, which is usually more than that of an indoor TV. Articulating mounts rated for outdoor use should be the preferred choice since these provide wider viewing angle.

Tip #4: Consider Cables

Outdoor elements tend to wear down cables, similar to patio furniture, lawns, and other things present outside. Thus, cables should have rating for outdoor usage and equipped with UV protection.

Tip #5: A Drip Loop

It is a type of TV cable that in the form of a 180O loop formed at the location where it enters the device. Due to this formation, water intrusion and the consequent expensive repairs as well as replacements are prevented.

Tip #6: Consider Size

Size of the outdoor TV will determine the mounting and weight restrictions that you will have to look into. Moreover, you should look for a spot which would be able to support the TV you are planning to install.

Tip #7: Importance of Location

Weather conditions and lighting can hamper viewing experience. If it is not possible to find a location that is protected from direct sunlight and nature's elements, then choose an outdoor TV that is capable of withstanding extreme weather conditions. Such TVs are also protected from moisture and similar other weather extremities. Additionally, the display should have high temperature panel and be direct light readable in case it is directly exposed to sunlight.

Tip #8: Proper Planning

Before taking up installation, there should be proper planning in place to make sure every aspect is taken care of. Such planning will help in saving time, energy, and money.

Tip #9: Power Requirement

Evaluate power requirement before proceeding with setup so that everything is in place and there is no need for re-work.

Tip #10: Controlling Display

In case, content is being split from any indoor source such as a satellite or cable box, then consider how outdoor display will be controlled. Thus, there should be required controller for accessing content, switching sources, and adjusting volume. There are wireless transceiver systems available that offer point to point wireless streaming and are weatherproof as well.

As we can see, there are several aspects to keep note of while installing an outdoor TV. During installation, you should also keep a time buffer for bad weather conditions since it is an outdoor setup and plan everything properly to accomplish your goal.
